How is dental practice is affected by chemical dependancy of our patients? Dr. Aviv Ouanounou discusses all the implications.
The problem of substance abuse has emerged as a major issue in society and has become an area of major focus for healthcare professionals. Statistically, more than 20 million Americans are affected by substance abuse, which includes the use of alcohol and other drugs, including prescribed medications. In this course, we will discuss alcohol and the various drugs of abuse and their mechanism of action. We will review modifications in dental treatment that may be necessary when treating a patient who is chemically dependent or recovering from chemical dependency. Finally, we will review the drugs used in dentistry and their potential interactions with these drugs of abuse.

Dr. Aviv is an assistant professor of pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry at the faculty of dentistry, University of Toronto. He received both his DDS and MSc at the University of Toronto and teaches pharmacology and Preventive Dentistry to undergraduate and graduate student. He is also a clinical instructor and Treatment Plan Coordinator.
Dr. Oanounou has won numerous teaching awards including wining “Best Teacher of the Year Award” three times: in 2013, 2015 and just recently in 2019. Also, he has been the recipient of the 2014-2015 prestigious Dr. Bruce Hord Master Teacher Award for excellence in teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto. Dr. Aviv is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and an active member of the American Academy of Pain Management and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has published and authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and owns a general private practice in Toronto.
